Buncombe County

Buncombe County, is situated in the Mountain Region of North Carolina in the central area of a high plateau. Bordered by the Blue Ridge Mountains, Great Craggies and Black Mountains on the east and the Great Smokies chain of the Appalachians on the west.

The County of Buncombe was established on December 5. 1791 from from Burke and Rutherford Counties. It was named in honor of Colonel Edward Buncombe, a Revolutionary War soldier.The County seat, Asheville is named in honor of Samuel Ashe, Governor of North Carolina from 1796 to 1798.
