Mitchell County
Mitchell County was named in honor of Dr. Elisha Mitchell, a professor at the University of North Carolina, who dies from a fall while exploring what is now Mt. Mitchell. This County was established in 1861 from parts of Burke, Caldwell, McDowell, Yancey and Watauga counties. Bakersville is the County Seat.
