Yancey County

Yancey County was established in 1833 from parts of Burke and Buncombe Counties, in honor of Bartlett Yancey, distinguished member of Congress. Yancey is bounded by Tennessee State and Mitchell, McDowell, Buncombe and Madison counties. Yancey County is the highest county east of the mississippi, with an average elevation of 2,819 feet. Yancey also has five of the highest peaks in the eastern United States.
